Move over dodgeball—pickleball is dominating school courts across the U.S.! In the past year, more than 30 school districts have introduced the sport to their PE programs, but it’s not just another gym class activity anymore. Schools are going all-in, with some even creating varsity pickleball teams. Districts like Montgomery County, Maryland, have led the charge by making pickleball a varsity sport in all 25 of their high schools (Montgomery County Public Schools). This district was the first to do so in the nation, initially offering pickleball through a corollary sports program for students with disabilities, but the overwhelming popularity has expanded its reach to the entire student body.

The benefits are clear: pickleball is easy to learn, fun, and requires little equipment compared to other sports. In Bloomington, Minnesota, teachers are being trained to implement the game in their schools, recognizing its potential to develop physical fitness, teamwork, and strategic thinking (Pickleball Tips). The game appeals to students of all skill levels—kids who might not excel in traditional sports are finding their stride on the pickleball court. Plus, it’s budget-friendly: pickleball equipment is inexpensive, and schools can set up multiple courts using minimal space (Edutopia).

Pickleball’s growth in schools is a reflection of its nationwide boom. From California to New Jersey, athletic directors are pushing to integrate pickleball into their districts, not only because of the sport’s inclusive nature but because of its lasting appeal for students. Pickleball combines the best elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton into one engaging package, and school administrators are taking note.

The Pickleball Take

It’s official: pickleball is no longer just a backyard sport for retirees—it’s now a serious contender in school athletics. Whether it’s varsity teams or friendly gym class matches, this sport is proving it can serve up more than just a good time. My take? Schools better prepare for some fierce kitchen battles as pickleball takes over!

Inside Pickleball Joke: “With varsity teams springing up, you just know there’s going to be some student who claims they’ve mastered the ‘dink of destiny.’ Let’s just hope no one starts a petition to rename the cafeteria the ‘Kitchen Zone’!”
